What is endovascular treatment(brain aneurysm)?

Endovascular treatment is performed as follows:
With the help of X-rays, through the groin (femoral artery) area, a thin tube called catheter is inserted into the vessels of the brain to place medicine and obstructing material (platinum coil) at the focal site of the aneurysm for treatment.

Precautions for Endovascular Treatment(Brain Aneurysm)

Please notify your doctor beforehand if you have or have ever had the following cases.

  1. 1. You have a history of allergic reactions after the use of certain medications.
  2. 2. You have a history of feeling ill after taking certain medication or after being put on a drip (especially contrast agent).
  3. 3. You have a history of getting zits or becoming hard to breathe or feeling dizzy after a treatment.

The Process of Endovascular Treatment(Brain Aneurysm)

One day before the operation

  1. 1. The anesthetist will conduct a patient interview.
  2. 2. Please do not eat food after 21:00 and do not drink water after 24:00.

Day of the operation

  1. 1. Meals for the whole day are forbidden; however, sometimes, you are allowed to get something light to eat 4 to 6 hours after the operation.
  2. 2. Please take the oral medicine for the current day according to the nurse's instructions.

Right before the operation

  1. 1. We will shave the body hair in your groin area along the thigh.
    *Reasons: Infection prevention
                    Easy to remove the fixing tape.
  2. 2. Please take off pajama, underwear and then wear the hospital gown.
  3. 3. Please take off glasses, watch, ring and dentures.
  4. 4. You will be put on a drip in the left hand.
  5. 5. The attending nurse will send you to the treatment room with a transfer bed or a wheel chair.

After the operationn

  1. 1. The patient room will be probably changed to intensive care unit after the treatment.
  2. 2. The oxygen tube, drip infusion tubes and urinary catheter will be inserted into your body after you awake from anesthesia. The stated tubes will be removed gradually next day or later after the operation.
  3. 3. The nurse will pick you up as soon as the operation is finished.
  4. 4. Without the doctor's permit, you can not bend the leg, in which the catheter is placed (4 to 6 hours after the operation). You also need to have a good rest within 4 to 6 hours after catheter withdrawal.
    *Please follow the doctor's instructions to act, for example, when is ok to move legs, when is ok to get up and when is ok to walk.
  5. 5. The nurse will help you move to the bed after arriving in the patient room, so please do not try to make a movement on your own.
  6. 6. Bed rest may easily cause back pain; please feel free to call a nurse to help you reposition yourself.
  7. 7. Contrast agent used in the operation will be egested with urine. The patient will be put on a drip in order to help contrast agent move faster.
  8. 8. The patient needs 2 hours of oxygen administration after the operation and 6 hours after finishing oxygen administration, the patient may drink some water.
  9. 9. The patient needs to defecate lying in the bed.
  10. 10. The skin where the catheter inserted through will be antisepticised 4 to 6 hours after the operation.

The first day after the operation

  1. 1. You will return to the patient room in the afternoon.
  2. 2. The urinary catheter will be removed at 16:00.
  3. 3. Please ask for a help from a nurse for walking for the first time after the operation.
  4. 4. Lunch is back to normal.
  5. 5. The patient may take a shower or bath 1day after the operation.
