What can be detected by colonoscopy test?

Colonoscopy is a test that allows the doctor to look at the inner lining of the large intestine (rectum and colon) to find polyps, inflammation, cancer and so on through the monitor. Colonoscopy is carried out with a tube about the diameter of an adult little finger, which is inserted from anus to the appendix. A small video camera is attached to the tube so that the doctor can take pictures at the same time. Colonoscopy is very popular, so please feel at ease, but during the test (about 5 minutes), your stomach may feel heavy.
Also, we will spray some safe pigment for a detailed check. Sometimes, if necessary, large-intestinal mucosa biopsy will be conducted for tissue examination as well.
The doctor will diagnose based on all the various factors together. Basically, you will know your diagnosis right after the test, but if biopsy is performed, diagnosis will take approximately 2 weeks.

Precautions to be taken before colonoscopy test?

The day before the test

Please notify your doctor beforehand if you have or have ever had the following cases. Please do not eat or drink after 21:00 of the day before the test.

  1. 1. Heart disease, enlarged prostate or glaucoma.
  2. 2. You have a history of allergic reactions after the use of certain medications.
  3. 3. You have a history of feeling ill after taking certain medication or after being put on a drip.
  4. 4. You have a history of getting zits or becoming hard to breathe or feeling dizzy after a treatment.

The day of the test

  1. 1. Please remove your false teeth, belly-warmer tie and girdle.
  2. 2. If you get too nervous and feel too uneasy, the examination can not be done smoothly. Please accept the examination with a relaxed mood.
  3. 3. Please lie in the bed for a good rest until it is your turn for the examination.

The day after the test

  1. 1. If necessary, biopsy will be conducted for tissue examination. In order to prevent bleeding after a biopsy, please do not drink alcohol and do not exercise intensely.
  2. 2. Effect of injection for the test will remain for a while, so please have a good rest in your room after the test.

The process of colonscopy test

The day before the test

  1. 1. Please take 4 prescribed laxative tablets before you to go sleep.

The day of the test

  1. 1. Please do not have your breakfast, but candy and clear drinks are acceptable.
  2. 2. If necessary, antiemetic will be taken after you crunch it in order to prevent nausea and vomiting.
  3. 3. You need to drink 2L of laxative solution for cleaning out the large intestine. You may find it easier to drink so much solution if you suck a candy while drinking.
    The laxative solution has function to excrete bowels, so you will have to use the bathroom several times. The test will start only when feces become transparent like water, which will take approximately 2 hours.
  4. 4. At the last minute before the test, we will inject a medicine restraining bowel movement into your shoulder.
  5. 5. You can talk freely during the test, so please relax yourself and talk to us at any time when you need us. The test will last about 20 minutes, but it may vary due to the individual difference. Please comfort yourself because a medical specialist will be with you and carry out the test.

The day after the test

  1. 1. After the test, the medical specialist in charge will give you some instructions. Please wait at the examining room until attending nurse picks you up there.
